Well now. It’s been a while since I’ve blogged! Pretty much a whole week by my count. Goodness me. At least I’m thrilled to report that my computer has been revived from the dead, thanks so much to my wonderful husband. (And thanks for all your kind emails!) That was scary! I nearly lost everything.

Unfortunately, pretty much all of my 2+ years of food photography didn’t make it. Those poor photos are now in food photo heaven, all ready for their close-ups. But I’m not feeling sorry for myself; here’s how I’m looking at it: I have a sweet new camera just begging to be put to good use. So I’m looking at this as an obligation and personal mission to keep on practicing and build on the hard-earned learning I gained from all those thousands (and thousands, and thousands) of lost photos. Onward and upward. And at least the photos of the kids are safe.

The above pics are recent practice shots that I just downloaded from my camera. Nothing too exciting here, just playing around with the manual functions. Now that my mac is back in biz, I hope to have a lot more photo/text-coherent posts on the horizon, rather than random silliness like this.

New camera test shots. Fun!

It’s here! It’s here! OMG!

Just in time for birthday party photos too!

I’ve already got the battery in the charger. So excited to play!

Best. Day. Ever.

Immersed

What a busy week it’s been!

I’ve been completely immersed in projects at home (updates to follow) and busy with some big events at Maya’s school. And sadly, my old pocket camera is truly dying a slow, painful death so I haven’t wanted to use it much lately. Sorry for the lack of photos recently. The good news is that I’ve got a new camera on the way and I’m so excited for it’s arrival (which should be any day now)! Expect lots more pics and food photography in the coming weeks.

Happy Friday!

Change is good

Last week was a blur of disorganization, chaos and imbalance. Apologies for disappearing on you guys, I guess I just needed bit of a break; a week off to “sharpen the saw” as they say.

I know a few of you kinda rely on my weekly meal plans for inspiration, and I’m sorry I didn’t deliver. Rest assured, I’ve got a new meal plan coming your way tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!

I’ve also been thinking about some of the features of my blog over the last few days. And I’ve decided that one of them - my weekly grocery shopping debriefing - will be discontinued. Believe it or not, it’s a lot of work, especially with 2 little kiddos afoot, to set up all my groceries for a photo and blog about the details after. I’ve kinda lost my zest for the process and I’m just not confident that anybody out there is truly benefitting from all that minutiae anyway. So, going forward, if you have any questions about my groceries, food budget, or how much I’ve spent, please don’t hesitate to email me anytime. I just don’t think I’m going to keep featuring my grocery shopping details on the blog anymore. That’s the bad news.

Here’s the good stuff:

  • My meal plans will have a new and improved design, and a much healthier direction!
  • You’ll see more recipes and food photography here, and on Mod Glo too!
  • Henry is totally walking now! My baby is now officially a toddler.
  • Hooray! We ordered a sofa* which is the first step to finally furnishing our currently empty living room. Who wants to see some homespun decorating, craft ideas and before and after room makeover pics? You do!

I’ve got lots of groovy stuff in the works. Stick around, guys! The fun is just beginning!

*Our sofa is set to arrive mid-September. We paid cash and are currently saving to purchase some more pieces for the living room. Slowly but surely, our dream house is becoming a dream home.

After dinner we went across the street to see a movie at the Vogue. Just then, it started lightly misting and I was able to play with the exposure time on my little point-and-shoot to get this great shot of the theater amidst droplets of mist. It looks like it’s snowing!
We saw Moonrise Kingdom. It was cute, but not as good as The Royal Tenenbaums, in my opinion. Definitely worth seeing though. The children were amazing actors! And I love how the sets in Wes Anderson movies are decorated just so.

Maya very politely asked if she could play with my camera today. My camera is a hunk of crap, but it’s my only hunk of crap, so I hesitated for a minute. But she looked so sweet and innocent and curious, so I said yes. I made her promise to be very gentle and not drop it, and she took her newfound responsibility quite seriously.

She disappeared for a long time, only resurfacing every 15 minutes or so to snap some pics in whatever room I was in, and then she’d be gone again. Finally, after nearly an hour, she returned my camera to me and said she was done.

Just now, as Dennis is bathing her and getting her ready for bed, I’m looking at all the photos she took. She snapped about a hundred, and I can trace her path through the house, room by room, by browsing through them. Many of her photos are blurry or over exposed (she was definitely pressing all the buttons!), but some of them actually turned out kind of cool. These are my very favorite of the bunch.

I realize it’s every mama’s parental duty to love her kids’ artwork. But I truly adore these photos and moreover, I love seeing the World According To Maya.

I am so, so proud of my girl.
